"An unforgettable—and Hollywood-bound—new thriller... A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
Entertainment Weekly

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

  • Engrossing Read, Well Written

Wow, what a wonderful read. I loved this book abd even stayed up late (or early) to finish it (and paying fir it now). 😉 A woman is found with a gun in her hand and her dead husband next to her. Did she really do it? We can’t tell anything because she’s literally stopped talking, which makes her seem even more guilty. I was attracted to the story and subject matter. The writing is excellent; crisp, clear. I lived the Greek mythology that surrounds the story. The story was perfectly paced and I was so interested to what would happen next. However, the biggest bang for me was toward the ending where I suddenly felt the room spin out of control and I had to go back and reread what I had just read, because I was so surprised. And then as the story continued everything fell into place. I had quite a few theories going because it seemed that several characters had plenty of motives and secrets. But none of my theories were correct. I loved Alex Michaelides writing and I will look forward to more stories.

  • Quick Fun Read

This was not as shocking of an ending as most reviews rave. Some may be able to put the pieces together about halfway through. However, it kept me turning the pages, and I would overall recommend it as a short, fun read.

Couldn’t put this novel down! So good.
  • Unbelievable Ending!

This book has a five star ending but I gave it four stars simply because it was a little slow to start for me for a “thriller”. However, the twist is so good it ties everything together and there is a real reason for the slowness at first. I think I just had a different impression of what I was getting into. If you go into it more from a psychological standpoint rather than a suspenseful view then you’ll love it from the start.
