Francisco Ayala (1906-2009) was a Spanish writer, essayist, and sociologist. Born in Granada, he went into exile after the Spanish Civil War, living in Argentina, Puerto Rico, and the United States, where he was a university professor. He returned to Spain in the 1970s. His work, which includes novels, short stories, and essays, is characterized by a deep reflection on the human condition, power, and exile. Among his most notable books are "Muertes de perro", "El fondo del vaso", and "El jardín de las delicias". He received the National Narrative Award in 1983 and the Cervantes Prize in 1991. He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy.
