Charles Dudley Warner was an American essayist, novelist, and journalist. He was born on September 12, 1829, in Plainfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1851 and practiced law in Philadelphia for some years before dedicating himself to journalism. In 1860, he joined the Hartford Evening Press as an associate editor, and later the Hartford Courant, where he worked for many years. He co-authored "The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today" (1873) with Mark Twain, a novel that gave its name to an era. His works are often humorous and reflective in nature, with a focus on rural life and nature. Among his other notable works are "My Summer in a Garden" (1871) and "Backlog Studies" (1873). He was also an editor of the "Library of the World's Best Literature" (1896-1897). Warner passed away on October 20, 1900, in Hartford, Connecticut.
