Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was an English writer and one of the pioneers of the modern novel. Born in Derbyshire, he began his career as a printer and publisher in London, an activity he successfully carried out for decades. At the age of fifty, he published his first novel, "Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded" (1740), which became an instant success. He continued to write influential works such as "Clarissa; or, The History of a Young Lady" (1747–48), considered by many his masterpiece, and "The History of Sir Charles Grandison" (1753). He is known for his epistolary novels, his detailed psychological exploration of characters, and his focus on morality and social customs.
