José Mármol (1817-1871) was an Argentine writer, journalist, politician, and diplomat, a prominent figure of the Generation of '37. He is mainly known for his romantic and political novel "Amalia," set during the dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas. He lived in exile in Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, and Chile due to his opposition to the Rosas regime. After the fall of Rosas, he returned to Argentina and held various public positions, including senator and diplomat.
