Gabriel Chevallier
Discover how Gabriel Chevallier masterfully blends a humorous exploration of changing morals in a picturesque French village during the roaring twenties with subtle hints of impending societal upheaval.

Gabriel Chevallier was a French writer born in Lyon in 1895 and who died in Biarritz in 1969. He is mainly known for his novel La Peur (Fear), published in 1930, which recounts his experiences in the trenches of World War I with a raw and anti-militarist tone. Another of his most popular works is Clochemerle (The Clochemerle Affair), a satire of French rural life published in 1934, which was adapted into film and television. He studied art and worked in various trades before dedicating himself to writing. His work often combined social criticism with humor and a keen observation of human nature.
