John Bunyan (1628-1688) was an English Baptist writer and preacher, globally renowned for his Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. He was born in Elstow, Bedfordshire, the son of a tinker. After a youth with little education and a period in the parliamentary army, he experienced a profound religious conversion. He joined a Baptist congregation and began to preach, which led to his arrest and imprisonment for nonconformity to the Church of England. He spent more than twelve years in prison in Bedford, during which time he wrote several of his most important works, including The Pilgrim's Progress, published in 1678. His writings, characterized by their direct language and deep faith, established him as a fundamental literary and religious figure. He died in London.
