Pío Baroja y Nessi (San Sebastián, 1872 – Madrid, 1956) was a prominent Spanish writer and one of the main exponents of the Generation of '98. He studied medicine, although he practiced the profession for a short time. He fully dedicated himself to literature, mainly cultivating novels, short stories, and essays. His work is characterized by a direct and agile style, an existential pessimism, and a profound social critique. Among his most celebrated works are the trilogies "The Struggle for Life" and "Agustín or the Delinquent," in addition to novels such as "The Tree of Knowledge," "Zalacaín the Adventurer" and "The Worries of Shanti Andía." He was a prolific author, with a vast literary production that exceeded a hundred titles.
