William Swan Plumer was an American Presbyterian theologian, author, and professor. He was born on May 26, 1802, in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in 1818 and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1826. He was ordained a minister in 1826 and served several Presbyterian churches in Virginia and Maryland before becoming professor of Pastoral and Ecclesiastical Theology at the Western Theological Seminary (now Pittsburgh Theological Seminary) in 1836. He later taught at Columbia Theological Seminary in South Carolina and Allegheny Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. Plumer was a prolific writer, known for his biblical commentaries, theological treatises, and sermons. Among his most notable works are "Studies in the Book of Psalms," "Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans," and "The Law of God as Contained in the Ten Commandments." He was a staunch advocate of Reformed theology and an influential leader within the Presbyterian Church in the United States. He passed away on October 22, 1880.
