Frederic Baraga was a Slovenian-American priest and bishop known as the "Apostle of the Ojibwe" and the "Apostle of Lake Superior". He was born in 1797 in Slovenia and ordained a priest in 1823. In 1831, he volunteered for missions in the United States and spent the rest of his life serving indigenous communities and settlers in the Great Lakes region, primarily in what is now Michigan and Wisconsin. He learned several Native American languages, including Ojibwe and Ottawa, and published an Ojibwe grammar and dictionary, as well as catechisms and prayer books. In 1853, he was appointed the first bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Michigan, which later became the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette. He died in 1868 and is currently venerable in the Catholic Church, in the process of canonization.
