Joaquín Balaguer Ricardo was a Dominican politician, writer, historian, and jurist. He served as president of the Dominican Republic on multiple occasions: from 1960 to 1962, from 1966 to 1978, and from 1986 to 1996. His political life spanned a large part of the Dominican 20th century, making him a central figure in the transition from the Trujillo dictatorship and in the consolidation of democracy, although his regime was also criticized for authoritarian practices. He was a member of the Dominican Academy of Language and author of numerous books on essays, history, poetry, and politics.
