Synopsis

Leonard undertakes a comprehensive examination of the fundamental issues surrounding gender, rock music, and the broader music industry. This is achieved through an in-depth case study focusing on 'female-centred' bands from both the United Kingdom and the United States, specifically those active in the 'indie rock' genre from the 1990s up to the contemporary period. Employing unique original interview material gathered directly from a diverse range of musicians, encompassing both amateur performers and those with international renown, the book critically highlights and rectifies a common oversight: the frequent absence of musicians' own perspectives and experiences within academic music industry studies. A central objective for Leonard is to advance beyond existing feminist scholarship, which has commendably documented and explored the lived experiences of female musicians. Instead, the work aims to elevate the discourse by providing a robust analytical discussion specifically on the intricate dynamics between gender and the music industry itself. Through this approach, the book directly delves into several areas that have traditionally received insufficient scholarly attention. These include: the profound impact of gender on the daily professional and personal lives of performing musicians; the pervasive gendered attitudes observed within music journalism, promotion, and production practices; the various responses and proactive strategies devised and implemented by female performers to navigate these challenges; and a detailed examination of the influential feminist network known as riot grrrl, along with the subsequent series of international festivals it inspired, notably recognized as Ladyfest events.
