Marta Harnecker Cerdá (Santiago, Chile, 1937 - Portugal, 2019) was a Chilean Marxist-Leninist intellectual, writer, journalist, and political activist. She studied philosophy and psychology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and was a student of Louis Althusser in France. After the 1973 military coup in Chile, she went into exile in Cuba. She was a prolific writer and theorist of Marxism, focusing on popular education and the training of political cadres. She founded the Center for Marxist Research (CIM) in Havana. In later years, she advised the government of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela. Her notable works include "Los conceptos elementales del materialismo histórico" and "La izquierda en el umbral del siglo XXI".
