Robert Edward Shryock (1893-1981) was a distinguished American medical historian. He served as professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania from 1930 until his retirement in 1964. He was director of the Institute of the History of Medicine at the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from 1949 to 1965. His works focused on the history of science and medicine in the United States, notably his book "The Development of Modern Medicine: An Interpretation of the Social and Scientific Factors Involved." He presided over the American Association for the History of Medicine and the History of Science Society. He received numerous honors, including the Sarton Medal from the History of Science Society in 1974.
