Gregorio Chil y Naranjo was a Spanish physician, historian, and naturalist, born in Telde (Gran Canaria) in 1833 and died in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1901. He founded the Museo Canario, an institution dedicated to the research, conservation, and dissemination of the historical and ethnographic heritage of the Canary Islands, especially Gran Canaria. His magnum opus was "Estudios históricos, climatológicos y patológicos de las Islas Canarias" (Historical, Climatological, and Pathological Studies of the Canary Islands), where he compiled a vast amount of information on the geology, flora, fauna, climate, diseases, and aboriginal history of the archipelago. He was a key figure in the dissemination of Canarian culture and a pioneer in the scientific study of the islands.
