Vicente Riva Palacio was a Mexican writer, historian, politician, military officer, and diplomat, born in Mexico City in 1832 and who died in Madrid in 1896. He was the son of Mariano Riva Palacio, a prominent political figure. He distinguished himself through his active participation in Mexican politics during the 19th century, serving as governor of the State of Mexico and as a general during the French Intervention and the Second Mexican Empire. His literary work includes poetry, theater, and novels, with "Monja y Casada, Virgen y Mártir" (also known as "Martín Garatuza") being his most celebrated historical novel. He also co-authored "El Libro Rojo." He served as director of the General Archive of the Nation and the National Library of Mexico.
