Juan de Pineda (1522-1593) was a Spanish Jesuit, theologian, and writer born in Seville. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1546. He was a professor of Sacred Scripture at Jesuit colleges in Cordoba and Seville. His main works include "Monarquía eclesiástica" (Ecclesiastical Monarchy) (1588-1593), a vast exegesis of the biblical books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, and commentaries on the books of Job, Esther, and Tobias. His work was characterized by his profound biblical knowledge and its application to spiritual life, influencing Spanish spirituality of his time.
