Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842) was a French explorer, naval officer, and naturalist. He was notable for his voyages of circumnavigation and scientific exploration in the South Pacific, Antarctica, and Oceania. He led several expeditions, including the one that searched for the remains of La Pérouse and the one that explored the Antarctic coasts, claiming Adélie Land for France. He made significant contributions to cartography, botany, zoology, and ethnography.
