Synopsis

This case study, conducted in 2020 as part of the Economics - International Economic Relations curriculum at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business, achieving a grade of 1,3, meticulously examines the strategic dilemmas confronting Netflix's management operations within the dynamic Indian market. The research seeks to address a pivotal question concerning the streaming giant's future: What viable strategies can Netflix implement to effectively adapt its established business model and secure a sustainable presence in the highly competitive Indian market? Specifically, the study investigates whether undertaking strategic acquisitions is a necessary course of action to navigate the unique market challenges, or if, alternatively, Netflix should consider withdrawing from India altogether to reallocate its resources and focus on other, potentially more lucrative, global territories. Netflix, recognized globally as a pioneering American online media streaming and content production powerhouse, experienced a period of remarkable international expansion throughout the 2010s, establishing a significant presence in numerous countries. Despite this impressive global track record, the company appears to be encountering substantial difficulties in India. India represents an exceptionally crucial market for Netflix, primarily owing to its massive population base and a burgeoning, robust demand for video streaming services. Nevertheless, efforts to replicate its global success in this particular region have proven challenging, indicating a struggle to effectively penetrate and capture a dominant share of the local market. The firm's growth trajectory in India has been severely impeded by a combination of factors, including the entrenched presence of several dominant local and international competitors, as well as highly specific and nuanced customer preferences and requirements that differ significantly from those in other markets where Netflix has thrived. To provide a comprehensive understanding, this case study undertakes a thorough analysis of Netflix's current operational framework and strategic positioning, alongside an in-depth examination of the intricate dynamics of the Indian video streaming market itself. Through this dual-pronged investigation, a range of potential strategic options are systematically evaluated and contrasted to identify the most promising pathways forward. The team of authors strongly recommends that Netflix pursue an aggressive strategy of acquiring local studios and production houses within India. This approach would enable Netflix to strategically continue its established verticalization strategy, integrating content creation more deeply into its operations, while simultaneously ensuring the production of content that is authentically tailored to meet the distinct cultural nuances and preferences of Indian consumers, thereby addressing specific local demands more effectively. Furthermore, the study advises Netflix to undertake a significant adaptation of its pricing structure to make its services more accessible and appealing to a broader segment of the Indian populace, acknowledging the generally heightened price sensitivity characteristic of Indian users. While there is an inherent risk that such a move could potentially dilute Netflix's global perception as a premium brand, the authors contend that this risk can be effectively mitigated. This can be achieved by introducing a more 'bare-bones,' lower-cost subscription tier specifically designed to cater to the immense number of Indian consumers who primarily rely on their smartphones for internet access and entertainment consumption, thereby tapping into a massive, underserved market segment without necessarily compromising the premium positioning of its existing higher-tier offerings.
