Paul Carus (1852 – 1919) was a German-American author, editor, and philosopher. He was a prolific writer and editor for the Open Court Publishing Company. He edited the journals The Open Court and The Monist, both dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of religion, science, and philosophy. Carus sought to create a "religion of science" that would reconcile scientific understanding with religious and ethical values, often incorporating Eastern philosophical ideas, especially Buddhism. Among his best-known works are "The Gospel of Buddha" and "Karma: A Story of Early Buddhism." He was a proponent of interfaith dialogue and a scientific approach to religion and ethics.
