Mariano Baquero Goyanes (Oviedo, 1907 – Murcia, 1993) was a Spanish writer, literary critic, and university professor. He studied Law in Oviedo and later dedicated himself to teaching, holding the chair of Spanish Literature at the University of Murcia from 1947 until his retirement. He was a profound connoisseur of 19th-century literature, especially realism and naturalism. His critical work focused on the study of literary genres such as the short story and the novel, and he analyzed the relationships between literature and other arts. He published numerous essays and articles, standing out for his methodological rigor and vast erudition. Among his best-known works are "Perspectivismo y contraste. De la Edad Media al Romanticismo" (Perspectivism and Contrast. From the Middle Ages to Romanticism) and "Qué es la novela" (What is the Novel), in addition to his studies on authors like Galdós and Clarín. He was an influential figure in 20th-century Spanish literary criticism.
