Saint John of the Cross, born Juan de Yepes Álvarez in 1542 in Fontiveros, Spain, was a Spanish mystic, Carmelite priest, and a central figure of the Counter-Reformation. Co-founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, he is considered one of the most important poets in Spanish literature. His best-known works include "Dark Night of the Soul," "Spiritual Canticle," and "Living Flame of Love," which explore the spiritual path to union with God. He was canonized in 1726 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1926. He died in 1591.
