Synopsis

Ernest Cline's science fiction novel, Ready Player One, was first published in 2011. The story is primarily set on a dystopian Earth during the years 2044 and 2045. This globalized civilization is grappling with severe challenges, including a widespread energy crisis, devastating climate change, and widespread social unrest and poverty. As an escape from their grim reality, the vast majority of humanity dedicates their lives to a massive multiplayer online simulation called the OASIS, functioning as a virtual universe for work, education, and entertainment. Upon his death, James Halliday, the eccentric and reclusive creator of the OASIS, launched a posthumous competition known as "the Hunt." This elaborate treasure hunt involves finding an Easter egg hidden within the OASIS, with the ultimate prize being Halliday's immense fortune and full control over the virtual world itself. The narrative follows the protagonist, Wade Watts, and his fellow Gunters (egg hunters) as they meticulously search for clues, all while fending off a powerful and ruthless corporate entity known as Innovative Online Industries (IOI), which seeks to seize control of the OASIS for its own nefarious purposes. A film adaptation of the novel, produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, will release in March 2018.
