Juan de Aviñón was a Spanish painter, gilder, and architect active in the 16th century, specifically between 1520 and 1550. He was born in Avignon, France, but developed most of his career in Seville, where he was an important figure in the transition from Gothic to Renaissance in Sevillian painting. He is credited with works such as the main altarpiece of the church of San Isidoro del Campo in Santiponce and collaboration in the decoration of the Royal Chapel of Seville Cathedral. He also worked in the Cathedrals of Córdoba and Jaén. His style is characterized by the introduction of Renaissance elements, though without completely abandoning Flemish and Gothic forms. He had a prolific workshop with numerous apprentices.
