Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681) was a Spanish playwright, poet, and writer of the Golden Age. He was born and died in Madrid. He studied at the Colegio Imperial in Madrid and at the universities of Alcalá and Salamanca, where he pursued canon law and theology. He served in the army and was a knight of the Order of Santiago. In 1651, he was ordained a priest. He is one of the greatest exponents of Spanish Baroque theater, known for his philosophical dramas, auto sacramentales, and comedies. Among his most famous works are Life is a Dream and The Mayor of Zalamea.
