Fray Luis de León (1527/1528-1591) was an Augustinian friar, humanist, and Spanish Renaissance poet. He studied and served as a professor of theology and scripture at the University of Salamanca. His poetic work is characterized by the search for serenity and harmony, fusing classical tradition and Christian mysticism. His most notable prose works are "De los nombres de Cristo" and "La perfecta casada". He was prosecuted and imprisoned by the Inquisition for five years for translating the Cantar de los Cantares.
