James Sully was a British philosopher and psychologist, born in Bridgwater in 1842. He studied at the University of Göttingen and the University of Berlin. He was one of the pioneers of experimental psychology in the United Kingdom and held the first chair of Psychology at University College London from 1892 to 1903. His main works include "Pessimism: a History and a Criticism" (1877), "Illusions: A Psychological Study" (1881), and "Outlines of Psychology with Special Reference to the Theory of Education" (1884). He died in London in 1923.
