Synopsis

Anneli Jordahl, a finalist for the prestigious August Prize and translated into nine languages, delivers in The Bear Hunter's Daughters a stark vivisection of the bestiality inherent in human beings and the deep scars of trauma, all framed in a ruthless novel that challenges preconceived notions of femininity and dismantles the idealization of family as a supposed pillar of society. In the confines of a mysterious and fierce forest, a ramshackle farm stands, home to seven girls. These young women, creatures of a wild and visceral existence, with their messy red hair, impudent slovenliness, and a vulgarity that defies norms, are a scandal to the society around them. They live on the fringes, unbound by conventions. The death of their progenitor, a celebrated bear hunter whose absence looms over them like a shadow, leaves them adrift with a mother whose coldness rivals the hostility of the outside world, which they vehemently distrust. Left to their own devices, the Leskin sisters are forced to battle in a family environment that has transformed into a violent and hostile battleground. Amid fierce power struggles and the constant goad of hunger, they desperately seek to survive, always under the ghost of a father whose absence has only served to increase their already deep solitude and helplessness. Inspired by Aleksis Kivi's The Seven Brothers, the classic Finnish tale from 1870, but masterfully transposed to a contemporary setting, The Bear Hunter's Daughters immerses us in a rarely explored universe: that of women who, faced with survival, do not hesitate to use violence as a necessary instrument. It is a brutally raw and profoundly feminist work that portrays with striking lucidity the eternal and complex tragedy woven into the relationships between fathers, mothers, and daughters.
