About the author William Conant Church:

William Conant Church (1836-1917) was an American journalist, editor, and United States Navy officer. He was born in Rochester, New York. During the American Civil War, he served as a major in the Union Army and was decorated for his bravery. After the war, he co-founded and edited several influential publications, including the Army and Navy Journal (later Army and Navy Register) in 1863 and Galaxy Magazine in 1866. He was a strong advocate for Navy reform and promoted the development of modern naval technology. Church was a prominent figure in New York's social and political life.
