Daniel Florencio O'Leary was an Irish military officer, diplomat, and historian who played a crucial role in the Spanish American wars of independence. He was born in Dublin in 1801 and died in Bogotá in 1854. He joined Simón Bolívar's forces in 1818 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming his aide-de-camp and close friend. After Bolívar's death, he dedicated much of his life to collecting and organizing the Liberator's documents, as well as writing his extensive "Memoirs," a fundamental work for the study of Spanish American independence. He also held diplomatic posts for Gran Colombia and Venezuela.
