Eulogio Gregorio Gillow y Zavalza was a Mexican archbishop, theologian, and writer, born on March 11, 1841, in Puebla de los Ángeles, Puebla, and passed away on May 19, 1922, at the San Marcos ranch, state of Oaxaca. Coming from a prominent family, he studied in Rome, where he earned doctorates in philosophy, theology, and canon law. He was bishop of Oaxaca from 1887 and subsequently its first archbishop in 1891. He was an influential figure in the Mexican Catholic Church during the Porfiriato, known for his erudition, his pastoral work, and his interest in archaeology and history, especially Mexico's pre-Hispanic and colonial periods. He wrote works such as "Apuntes históricos" (Historical Notes) and "El arzobispado de Antequera" (The Archbishopric of Antequera), among others. He contributed significantly to the construction of temples and hospitals in his archdiocese and was a cultural and educational benefactor.
