José Carlos Mariátegui (Moquegua, 1894 - Lima, 1930) was an influential Peruvian writer, political thinker, journalist, and activist. He is considered one of the most important theorists of Marxism in Latin America. He founded the magazine Amauta, the Peruvian Socialist Party (later the Peruvian Communist Party), and the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP). His most notable work is "Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality" (1928), where he analyzes Peruvian society from a Marxist perspective, paying special attention to the indigenous question. Despite fragile health and a short life, his thought remains fundamental for understanding the social and political history of Peru and the region.
