François Vincent Raspail (1794-1878) was a French chemist, botanist, physician, and politician. Self-taught and a pioneer in the use of the microscope in biology and medicine, he contributed to the development of cell theory and histology. He was a proponent of hygiene and public health, popularizing remedies such as camphorated alcohol. Politically, he was an active republican and socialist, participating in the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, which earned him several imprisonments and exiles.
