Luis Cernuda

Luis Cernuda Bidón (Seville, 1902 - Mexico City, 1963) was a Spanish poet and literary critic, a prominent member of the Generation of '27. He studied Law in Seville, where he met Pedro Salinas, who became his mentor. He lived in Madrid, where he integrated into the literary circles of the time, frequently visiting the Residencia de Estudiantes. He worked as a Spanish lecturer at various European universities, such as Toulouse and Cambridge. During the Spanish Civil War, he aligned with the republican cause. In 1938, he began an exile that took him first to England, then to the United States, and finally to Mexico in 1947, where he would reside until his death. His poetic work, influenced by surrealism and the romantic tradition, addresses themes such as solitude, desire, forbidden love, and the search for beauty and authenticity, with a melancholic and reflective tone. Among his most important works are "La realidad y el deseo" (which gathers all his poetry), "Los placeres prohibidos," and "Donde habite el olvido." He was also a prolific essayist and critic.
