Esteban Echeverría

Esteban Echeverría (Buenos Aires, 1805 - Montevideo, 1851) was an Argentine writer and politician, a prominent figure of literary Romanticism in his country and Latin America. He studied in Buenos Aires and later in Paris, where he became familiar with European Romantic currents. Upon his return to Argentina, he founded the Literary Salon (Salón Literario) and the Association of the Young Argentine Generation (Asociación de la Joven Generación Argentina) (also known as the Generation of '37), intellectual groups that promoted new literary and political ideas. Exiled in Uruguay due to his opposition to the regime of Juan Manuel de Rosas, he continued his literary and political work. His best-known works include the narrative poem "La cautiva" (The Captive) (considered the first Argentine Romantic work) and the short story "El matadero" (The Slaughterhouse), a strong social and political critique. His style marked the beginning of modern literature in Argentina.
