Mariano José de Larra

Mariano José de Larra (1809-1837) was a Spanish writer, journalist, and playwright, a leading figure of Romanticism in his country. He is mainly known for his sharp articles of social and customs criticism, published under pseudonyms such as Fígaro or El Pobrecito Hablador. His work reflects a pessimistic and disillusioned view of Spanish society of his time, addressing topics like politics, education, or daily life with an ironic and satirical style. His life was marked by restlessness and instability, culminating in his suicide at the age of 27.
