Ramón Xirau

Ramón Xirau Subías (Barcelona, 1924 - Mexico City, 2017) was a Spanish-Mexican philosopher, poet, and essayist. Son of the philosopher Joaquín Xirau and Anna Subías, he went into exile in Mexico with his family after the Spanish Civil War. He studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Sorbonne in Paris. He was a professor of philosophy at UNAM for more than 50 years, a researcher at the Institute of Philosophical Research at the same university, and a member of El Colegio Nacional. His work encompassed philosophy, literary criticism, and poetry, and he was a fundamental reference in Hispanic-American thought and culture. Among his notable works are Pensamiento y poesía en la obra de Antonio Machado, Demos gracias a la vida, and Contra la ceguera. He received numerous awards, including the National Prize for Sciences and Arts of Mexico and the Alfonso Reyes International Prize.
