Raymond Chandler

Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1888. Educated in England, he became a pulp fiction writer at age 40 during the Great Depression. He is known for his 'hardboiled' detective novels, starring private detective Philip Marlowe. His most famous works include "The Big Sleep" and "The Long Goodbye". He was also a successful Hollywood screenwriter. He died in La Jolla, California, in 1959.
