Roque Barcia (Córdoba, 1845 - Madrid, 1903) was a Spanish writer, journalist, and politician. A federal republican and freemason, he stood out for his progressive and anticlerical ideology. He was the author of numerous works, including dictionaries, grammars, and texts on philosophy, politics, and religion. His "Diccionario general etimológico de la lengua española" (General Etymological Dictionary of the Spanish Language) (1880-1883) is one of his most renowned works. He was also a member of the Cortes (Spanish parliament) and founder of several newspapers.
