He is known for his extensive fantasy series such as "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" (which influenced authors like George R.R. Martin) and its continuation "The Last King of Osten Ard," as well as for the science fiction tetralogy "Otherland" and the fantasy series "Shadowmarch." His works are characterized by detailed world-building, complex characters, and far-reaching plots. Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked in various fields, including radio and music.
