Adolfo Menéndez y Samará was a Cuban writer and journalist, born in Havana in 1845 and died in the same city in 1913. He studied at the Colegio de San Pedro and later at the University of Havana. He stood out for his work as director of several periodical publications, including La Revista de Cuba and La Ilustración Cubana. He was a prolific author of novels, short stories, and plays, in which he addressed social and costumbrista themes of his time. Among his best-known works are the novel The Executioner's Daughter and the short story The Secret of the Tomb. He also worked as a professor and was a member of the Academy of Arts and Letters of Cuba.
