William Harrison Ainsworth

William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) was an English historical novelist, born in Manchester. He initially studied law, but dedicated himself to journalism and literature. He was editor of several magazines and became known for his novels of intrigue, often with Gothic elements and set in historical settings, mainly in London or Lancashire. Among his most notable works are Rookwood, Jack Sheppard, The Tower of London, and Old St Paul's. His popularity declined in his later years.
