Byung-Chul Han is a South Korean philosopher and essayist based in Germany. He was born in Seoul in 1959. He studied metallurgy in Korea before moving to Germany to study philosophy, German literature, and theology. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Freiburg in 1994 with a thesis on Martin Heidegger. He has been a professor of philosophy at the University of Basel, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, and currently at the Berlin University of the Arts. His work is characterized by a critical analysis of contemporary society, addressing topics such as fatigue, transparency, self-exploitation, neoliberalism, and digitalization. Among his most influential books are "The Burnout Society" and "Psychopolitics".
