Carlo Maria Martini (1927-2012) was an Italian Jesuit cardinal, biblical scholar, and theologian. He served as Archbishop of Milan from 1980 to 2000. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 1983. He was noted for his progressive positions within the Catholic Church and for his deep knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. He was an influential figure in interreligious dialogue and pastoral renewal.
