Eihei Dogen was a Japanese Buddhist monk, philosopher, and founder of the Soto Zen school in Japan. He was born in 1200 in Kyoto, Japan. He studied at Mount Hiei and later traveled to China, where he studied the Caodong school of Chan (Zen). Upon his return to Japan in 1227, he introduced and established the Soto Zen school, founding temples such as Koshoji and Eiheiji. He is the author of the Shobogenzo, a fundamental work that expounds his Zen philosophy, emphasizing the practice of zazen (sitting meditation) as enlightenment here and now. He died in 1253.
