Jaime Luciano Balmes (Vic, August 28, 1810 - July 9, 1848) was a Spanish philosopher, theologian, apologist, sociologist, and politician. He is considered one of the most important figures of Catholic thought in Spain during the 19th century. Among his most notable works are "Protestantism Compared with Catholicism in their Relations with European Civilization" and "Fundamental Philosophy". He was also an influential journalist and a defender of conservative and Catholic ideas.
