John William Stanhope Hows

John William Stanhope Hows (London, 1801 – New York, 1872) was a British-American actor, elocutionist, professor, and author. After an initial career as a stage actor in London, he emigrated to the United States around 1830, where he established himself as a prominent elocution professor in New York, teaching at institutions such as Columbia College. He is known for his works on elocution and his compilations of texts for public reading, including titles such as "The Practical Elocutionist" and "The Ladies' Reader".
