Jose de Viera y Clavijo

Jose de Viera y Clavijo (1731-1813) was an enlightened Canarian polymath, writer, historian, naturalist, and ecclesiastic. He was born in Los Realejos, Tenerife. After studying in Salamanca and traveling through Europe as a tutor, he returned to the Canary Islands where he became a canon of the Cathedral of Las Palmas. His masterpiece is "Noticias de la historia general de las Islas Canarias" (News of the General History of the Canary Islands), the first complete history of the archipelago. He also wrote about botany, poetry, and essays, being a central figure of the Enlightenment in the Canary Islands.
