José Emilio Pacheco (1939-2014) was a Mexican poet, narrator, essayist, translator, and literary critic, a central figure in 20th-century Latin American literature. He was born in Mexico City. His work is characterized by its formal rigor, ethical commitment, and a constant reflection on time, history, and identity, often with a melancholic and critical tone. Among his most notable works are the poetry collections Los elementos de la noche, No me preguntes cómo pasa el tiempo, and Tarde o temprano, and the novel Las batallas en el desierto. He was awarded numerous prizes, including the Mexican National Prize for Arts and Sciences (1992), the Queen Sofía Ibero-American Poetry Prize (2004), and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize (2009).
