José Fabio Araya Monge is a Costa Rican writer, born in Atenas, Alajuela. He is known for his historical novels, which often explore the pre-Columbian and colonial periods of Costa Rica. Among his notable works are "La lanza de Tsuru" (Tsuru's Spear), "El tesoro de Diquís" (The Treasure of Diquís) (winner of the Aquileo J. Echeverría National Novel Prize in 1989), and "Los fantasmas de Cartago" (The Ghosts of Cartago). He also practices as a physician.
